Haitian earthquake, 2010

The earthquake occurred January 12, 2010. It is estimated that over 30,000 building were either destroyed or servery damaged. It also caused about 8 billion in damage to the country. It was already the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. A little under 300,000 homes were destroyed or servery damaged, as well as about 80% of its schools and over half of government buildings. It is also estimated that over 100,000 people were killed as a result of this horrific event.

The earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indian ocean in 2004 massively affected all areas of life in the world around the disaster. The earthquake struck at 8 am local time and was a 9.1 on the Richter scale. The energy that was released amounted to about 23,000 Hiroshima type atomic bombs. 500,000 were injured and over 230,000 people were killed. Housing and fishing industries were the most affected. 6 billion in Rupiah in fishing was lost and 13 billion in the housing industries. There were 1.6 billion was lost in infrastructure and over 4.8 billion was lost in the productive sector of the countries. All local businesses were destroyed or severely damaged by not just the earthquake but also the tsunami that followed.
